Fall Leaves and Dryer Hoods: Why October Yard Cleanup Should Include the Exterior Vent

October yard work in West Chester and Media usually means gutters, beds, and whatever blew onto the lawn. The dryer hood sits in that same leaf path and almost never gets a look. A flap that was fine in September can be packed with wet leaves by the end of a windy week.

Leaves do not have to fill the whole duct to cause trouble. A handful caught in the damper is enough to keep it from opening. The dryer still runs. The air does not leave.

Where leaves actually collect

Side-wall hoods low on the foundation collect leaves that drift along the house. Hoods under a deck or behind a shrub collect them and hold moisture. Roof caps on two-story homes in West Chester, Exton, and parts of Delaware County catch leaves that gutters missed. You will not see that cap from the driveway.

Wet October leaves are worse than dry ones. They mat, stick to lint already on the flap, and stay put after the yard looks clean. A hood on the north side of the house stays damp longer, so the mat lasts.

What you will notice inside

  • Loads take longer right after a windy weekend.
  • The outside flap does not lift, or it is held open by debris.
  • The laundry room feels humid even though the windows are still open some days.
  • You find leaf bits in the last few inches of the hood when you look from the ground.

Brush leaves away from the hood if you can reach them safely. Do not poke the damper with a stick. Bent flaps are a common repair after yard cleanup. Do not climb onto a wet October roof to check a cap. Weak airflow inside is enough reason to book that visit.

Cleaning the line, not just the landing

Clearing the hood removes today's leaves. It does not remove lint already in the elbows from summer and back-to-school loads. Dryer Vent Wizard of Chester and Delaware Counties cleans the full path and checks that the damper seats after the debris is gone. If the hood sits in a drift spot every fall, say so. A damper that closes, and a hood that is not buried in a bush, sheds the next leaf drop instead of collecting it.

Add the hood to the gutter day

If you’re already outside with a rake, look at the dryer vent before you put the tools away. Schedule the cleaning if the flap sticks or the cycles have slowed.
